Gamma Xi History
Gamma Xi can trace it origins to the local fraternity, Phi Epsilon, which was founded on November 21, 1922. Afer six years of active petitioning Pi Kappa Alpha, Phi Epsilon was granted its charter as Gamma Xi on October 26, 1929. The Pi Kap Building Association was established Ma6 6, 1930 and is designed to act as a board of trustees who oversee the finances and maintain the property on which the chapter resides.

In 1932 member Sidwell Collins was killed in a car accident in Spokane. The following year his father, Dr. I.S. Collins, donated part of his book collection to begin a library in memory of his son. By 1937 he had donated more volumes and had established a trust account. At this time, the collection was acclaimed as one of the most outstanding fraternity collections in the country. The orignal collection included two personally autographed original volumes by Mark Twain as well as other priceless volumes and collections.

In 1953, fire destroyed the front portion of the chapter house, now at its present location of 710 NE California Street. Along with the loss of the house, a large portion of the Sidwell Collins Library was also lost. During the years of 1954 through 1958 there is little record of the activities of Gamma Xi, until 1959 when brother Bob Patrick ('54) was elected as ASWSU President.

The early 90's was a turning point in Gamma Xi history as brother Scott "Jive" Stewart headed the plans to renovate and add a new wing on to the back side of the house. May 14, 1991 marked the ground breaking for the new addition which makes Gamma Xi one of the largest fraternities at WSU. The two new hallways were aptly named after Scott "Jive" Stewart as "Upper Jive" and "Lower Jive". A 4,000 squre foot recreation room was also built underground that has housed many memorable social functions.

Following the remodel of the chapter house, Gamma Xi was the top rushing house on campus and by 1997 was over a 100 man chapter. Since 1997, Gamma Xi has won two Robert Adger Smythe Awards which awards the top 5% of Pi Kappa Alpha Chapters as being the best overall Pike chapters. During this last decade, Gamma Xi has also been recognized multiple times as top five in the country for pledge education, alumni relations, membership education, rush, housing, and community service.

Background of Pi Kappa Alpha
Pi Kappa Alpha International Fraternity is an international, secret, social, Greek-letter, college Fraternity. It was founded at 47 West Range at the University of Virginia on March 1, 1868.

Pi Kappa Alpha is an international brotherhood composed of 201 student chapters, 7 colonies, and 119 alumni associations. The Fraternity has more than 220,000 initiated members and has maintained the largest average chapter and pledge class size of any international fraternity for most of the past 20 years. Pi Kappa Alpha, through its members, has donated millions of dollars to philanthropic causes and community organizations across North America. Pi Kappa Alpha's vision is to "set the standard of integrity, intellect, and achievement for our members, host institutions, and the communities in which we live."

Six men are generally recognized as the Fraternity's founders in 1868 - Frederick Southgate Taylor, Robertson Howard, Julian Edward Wood, James Benjamin Sclater Jr., Littleton Waller Tazewell (Bradford) and William Alexander. (Only four were present at the first meeting and Alexander's membership was subject to a vote.) The reason for their desire to start a fraternity is eloquently described in Pi Kappa Alpha's preamble: "For the establishment of friendship on a firmer and more lasting basis; for the promotion of brotherly love and kind feeling; for the mutual benefit and advancement of the interests of those with whom we sympathize and deem worthy of our regard; We have resolved to form a Fraternity; believing that, thus we can most successfully accomplish our object."
