| Happy Founders Day! |
|
On March 1st, 2010, Pi Kappa Alpha celebrated 142 years as the finest fraternal experience in North America! Regardless of when and where you were initiated into Pi Kappa Alpha, March 1st is the day we all come together as brothers in the bonds of phi phi kappa alpha and celebrate the establishment of our great Fraternity. At this special time of year, the Gamma Xi Alumni Association encourages you to remember those who came before us and those who today embody what Pi Kappa Alpha means to you and me. We marvel that the values which mold our brotherhood were so accurately and eloquently captured by men in their late teens and early twenties - and more than a century ago. That they did so, and that this Fraternity not only endures but thrives is evidence of the virtue which was and is at the core of Pi Kappa Alpha. It has flourished on campuses large and small, public and private, in every corner of the continent. And it prospers today because the principles on which we are based remain vibrant in the hearts of brothers across the generations and across the miles. Happy Founders Day!

| Lighty Dedication - Homecoming Weekend |
On the morning of September 27th (WSU Homecoming), Undergraduates, Alumni, Memorial Headquarters Staff and WSU faculty gathered at the Chapter House in Pullman, WA, for the dedication of the Alumni Room in honor of Brother Phillip Malcolm Lighty ('38) who passed away in January 2008. Roberta Lighty (daughter-in-law) and Jennifer Lighty (granddaughter) represented the Lighty family at the event. The dedication included comments from Alumni Board and WSU Foundation Member, Doug “Stu” Thomas (’83), Chapter Advisor, Bill Hamilton (’95), Chapter President, Matt Kozial (’06), International Fraternity Foundation Executive Director, Patrick F. Haynes (Delta Theta '81), Gamma Xi Alumni Association President, Dan Studer (’92), WSU President Emeritus, Dr. Samuel H. Smith (’94) and WSU President, Dr. Elson S. Floyd. The dedication was culminated with the unveiling of a bronze plaque which honors brother Lighty and which is now proudly displayed in the Phil Lighty Alumni Room. The Gamma Xi Alumni Association thanks Stu Thomas and family for their financial generosity and commitment of time, which was vital to the success of the Lighty Dedication.

Brother Lighty died Sunday, January 20th, just two days shy of his 90th birthday. He is survived by his wife, June, of 64 years. A few of Phil and June's many accomplishments include being named as Laureates by the WSU Foundation (a designation for those who reach the $1 million mark), having the WSU Student Services Building named in their honor, establishing The Lighty Student Leadership Program Fund which provides scholarships for out-of-state students (including several Gamma Xi Alumni), establishing an endowment with the International Fraternity which pays for Gamma Xi Undergraduate Officers to travel to the annual Leadership Forum and being inducted into the 1868 Society, President's Council and Order of West Range by the International Fraternity. Phil founded the California Chapter of WSU's Alumni Association and was the first "President's Associate" and served as a Trustee Ambassador.
Former Executive Director of the WSU AlAssociationction, Keith Lincoln, said of Phil, "If everyone was like Phil, there would be no problems in this world." The Daily Evergreen ran a nice article on Phil on January 24th, which can be accessed via the following link: www.dailyevergreen.com/story/24512.
Thank you Phil for truly living the motto, Once a Pike, Always a Pike!
